How to Start Online Therapy With Insurance in New York
Fill out Manhattan Mental Health Counseling's (MMHC) contact form with your insurance card and one sentence on what you want help with. Take a free 15-minute call, where your exact copay is confirmed. Then a Therapy Coordinator recommends an available therapist within 24 hours of the form. Submit the intake packet online, then meet by video. First sessions are often available within five days after the form is submitted.
Video sessions for clients age 15 and older who are in New York State during sessions. In-network with 13 insurance plans.

Therapy should take you somewhere. Every four weeks you and your therapist check where you are against where you started, so you both know whether it is working.
Relationship first. Across 295 studies, the bond with your therapist predicts whether therapy helps.[3] We match on that, not on the next open slot.

Manhattan Mental Health Counseling (MMHC) is a New York telehealth psychotherapy practice founded in 2014 with 100+ therapists, serving clients age 15 and older who are physically in New York State during each live-video session. It is in-network with 13 insurance plans and bills insurers directly. A Therapy Coordinator makes every match by hand. The steps below are MMHC's process from contact form to first month.

Quick Answers
Quick Answers About Starting Online Therapy With Insurance in New York
- 1
What Do I Need to Start Online Therapy With Insurance?
Your insurance card, one sentence on what you want help with and two or three times each week you can keep. Put those in MMHC's contact form. No diagnosis, no referral letter, no history.
- 2
How Long Does It Take to Start?
The contact form is a few sentences. Within 24 hours, a Therapy Coordinator recommends an available therapist. First sessions are often available within five days after the form is submitted.
- 3
What Happens on the Free Screening Call?
Fifteen minutes with the support team. They confirm you are in New York, that scheduled outpatient video therapy fits what you need and your exact cost. Going over your coverage takes about 5 minutes. Nothing is signed on the call.
- 4
What Is the Intake Packet?
The forms MMHC needs before you start. The packet must be submitted online before your first session. Filling it in fully gives your therapist a complete picture for session one.
- 5
What Happens in the First Session?
A 53-minute video session on Zoom from a private place in New York. Your therapist talks through what brought you here and what you want to change, and you set the recurring time together.
- 6
What Will I Pay When I Start?
The copay your plan sets, confirmed on the screening call before you book. More than 3 in 4 MMHC clients paid $0 per session with in-network insurance in Q2 2026. Coverage and cost by plan are in the insurance coverage guide.
What to Have Ready Before You Fill Out the Contact Form
Four things. Together they let MMHC finish the checks quickly instead of coming back to you with questions.
- Your insurance card. Front and back, or the member ID and group number. The exact plan name on the card matters; two plans from one insurer can have different networks.
- One sentence on what you want help with. Everyday language. "I cannot stop replaying conversations at night" is enough. You do not need a diagnosis.
- Two or three times each week you can keep. The recurring time is part of the match, and it decides whether therapy continues past the first visit.
- Any essential preference. Language, gender or approach, if one matters to you. Say which are essential and which are flexible.
With those four in hand, the contact form is a few sentences, and MMHC has everything it needs to match you without a second round of questions.
What Happens at Each Step, From the Form to the First Month
Each stage below says what you do, what MMHC does and what you have at the end of it.
1. The Contact Form
The contact form asks for your insurance, what you want help with, your preferences and your availability. It does not ask for your history. After you submit, you get an email with a link to choose your free 15-minute screening time. What you have at the end: your screening call booked.
2. The Free Screening Call
The support team confirms three things: that you are physically in New York, that scheduled outpatient video therapy fits what you need and your exact cost under your plan. Going over your coverage takes about 5 minutes. Nothing is signed on the call. What you have at the end: your exact cost, confirmed before your first session.
Why the call comes before the match: the match uses what the call confirms. Your exact plan decides which therapists are in-network for you, your cost decides what you can sustain, and the call is where you say in your own words what you want help with. A match made before those three are known is a guess.
3. The Match
Within 24 hours of your contact form, Therapy Coordinator Judy Stiffler recommends an available therapist. The match weighs your concern, goals, preferences, insurance, recurring schedule and the relevant experience of the therapists who are available. A person makes every match; no algorithm picks for you. The support team helps schedule your first session. What you have at the end: a recommended therapist who is in-network for your exact plan.
Why a person and not a form: the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the best-studied predictors of whether therapy helps. A 2018 meta-analysis of 295 studies involving more than 30,000 patients found a consistent association between a stronger therapeutic alliance and better psychotherapy outcomes across different treatment approaches.[3] MMHC matches on the things that build that relationship, not on who has the next open slot.
4. The Intake Packet
Your intake packet must be submitted online before your first session. Complete it accurately and fully; it is how your therapist arrives at session one with a full picture instead of spending the hour collecting it. MMHC uses the GAD-7 and the PHQ-9, two short questionnaires about anxiety and mood,[1][2] every four weeks and at discharge. The GAD-7 opens with one question: over the last two weeks, how often have you been bothered by feeling nervous, anxious or on edge?[1] What you have at the end: everything submitted, so the first session is therapy, not paperwork.
5. The First Session
A 53-minute video session on Zoom, from a private place in New York. Your therapist talks through what brought you here and what you want to change, and you decide together how to work. The first session is a starting point, not a commitment to one person: if the fit is not right, say so and a Therapy Coordinator rematches you within MMHC; rematching costs nothing extra, regular therapy charges still apply, and coverage depends on whether the new therapist takes your plan. What you have at the end: a plan for the next session and a recurring time with the same therapist.
6. The Second Session and Your Recurring Time
The first opening and your ongoing time can differ. A cancellation on Friday can start you early while your regular slot is Tuesday evening. Confirm both before you count yourself started. Evening and weekend session times are available, subject to clinician availability. Online therapists accepting new clients in New York covers how to hold a recurring time at any practice.
7. The First Month
You complete the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 every four weeks and at discharge, with milestone check-ins at weeks 8, 16 and 52 and after therapy ends. You and your therapist use the scores alongside your goals to review how care is going. This is why the packet matters at the start: a 2021 meta-analysis of 58 studies involving 21,699 patients found that progress feedback produced a small average improvement in symptoms and a small reduction in dropout,[4] and a separate meta-analysis of randomized studies found a larger benefit among clients who were not improving as expected.[5] These studies concern psychotherapy broadly, not MMHC's own outcomes. "I'm not sure this is helping" is a valid place to start that conversation. If your insurance changes, MMHC re-verifies your benefits and bills the new plan; you usually keep the same therapist. How to know if a therapist is right for you covers fit.
Seven stages, one practice. You fill out the contact form; MMHC runs the checks.

Questions About Starting Online Therapy With Insurance
If you do not see your question here, call our support team at 212-960-8626.
Do I Need a Diagnosis or a Referral Letter to Start?
No. Describe what is hard in everyday language and MMHC takes it from there. If your plan requires a referral or an authorization before the first session, the support team checks that with your insurer and tells you on the screening call. The insurance coverage guide explains referrals and authorizations by plan type.
What If I Did Not Get the Email to Book My Screening Call?
Check your spam folder for a message from MMHC, then call 212-960-8626 and the support team books the call with you on the phone. Support hours are Monday to Thursday 9:00am to 5:30pm and Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm.
Is Anything Signed on the Screening Call?
No. The call is a conversation. Everything you sign is in the intake packet, which must be submitted online before your first session.
Why Does the Intake Packet Matter?
It is how your therapist arrives at the first session already knowing your history and your goals. A complete packet means the first hour is spent on you, not on collecting information.
Do I Need to Download Anything for Video Sessions?
Sessions are on Zoom. You need a phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection and a private place in New York State. You receive the session link from MMHC before each appointment.
Will My First Session Be at the Same Time as My Ongoing Sessions?
Sometimes not. The first opening and your recurring time can differ. Confirm both at the first session, so you leave with the next date and the ongoing time with the same therapist.
What If I Want to Switch Therapists After I Start?
Tell your Therapy Coordinator what is not working. They rematch you with another MMHC therapist, and you do not restart intake. The Therapy Coordinator responds to rematch requests within one business day, and rematching within MMHC costs nothing extra. Regular therapy charges still apply, and coverage depends on whether the new therapist takes your plan.
Can I Start Before I Have Met My Deductible?
Yes. If your deductible applies to therapy, early sessions cost more until you meet it. The support team tells you that number on the screening call. Many MMHC clients pay a flat copay with no deductible; in Q2 2026, more than 3 in 4 clients paid $0 per session with in-network insurance.
What If My Insurance Changes After I Start?
Tell the support team. MMHC re-verifies your benefits and bills the new plan. You usually keep the same therapist. If the new plan does not cover your therapist, MMHC tells you and goes over self-pay ($200 first session, $175 after) before anything changes.
How Is MMHC Different From a Therapy App?
MMHC is one New York psychotherapy practice. A Therapy Coordinator personally handles matching and rematching, the support team handles benefits and scheduling, and your therapist provides care in scheduled video sessions. MMHC does not provide in-person care, psychiatry or medication management.
