Understanding Your Benefits

Does Medicare Cover Therapy?

Yes. Medicare covers outpatient therapy — and Medicare Advantage plans in New York often make it even more affordable than Original Medicare. Instead of paying 20% coinsurance after a deductible, many Medicare Advantage members pay a simple fixed copay of $0–$30 per session, with no deductible for mental health services.

Many older adults come to Manhattan Mental Health Counseling for therapy for:

  •  Depression that feels heavier in retirement or after loss
  • Anxiety about health, independence, or the future
  • Grief after losing a spouse or lifelong friends
  • Stress from caring for a partner or aging parent
  • Loneliness or social isolation
  • Adapting to chronic illness or medical changes

Our late-life mental health counselors understand the unique challenges of aging, including physical health limitations, medication interactions, and the social dynamics of later-life mental health care.

No Preset Limits

How Many Therapy Sessions Does Medicare Pay For?

Medicare Advantage plans have no preset annual limits on therapy sessions. Coverage is based on medical necessity as determined by your therapist's clinical documentation.

Think of therapy like dental care – you don't stop brushing because a cavity healed. Many of our Medicare patients start with a specific challenge and stay because consistent support keeps them sharper, more resilient, and more connected. There is no preset limit, and many patients choose to continue therapy as a proactive investment in their mental health.

Our senior care therapists use evidence-based approaches proven effective for older adults:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) adapted for seniors

Problem-Solving Therapy (PST) focused on daily challenges

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for relationship and role changes

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for values-based living in later life

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction adapted for age-related stressors

Telehealth for Seniors

MMHC's Senior-Friendly Telehealth Features:

Simplified technology – one-click access through phone or tablet

Large-text interface options

Caregiver inclusion – family members can participate as appropriate

Why Seniors Choose MMHC's Telehealth:

Eliminates transportation barriers

Reduces exposure to illnesses in medical settings

Provides consistency during weather or health disruptions

Patient Stories

What Medicare Patients Say About MMHC

Nothing but a truly wonderful experience. Manhattan mental health counseling provided me with a wonderful therapist and listened and supported me throughout my healing Journey for over a year. Throughout my healing Journey I was always sent encouraging messages and prompts and affirmations through email on a weekly basis that I added to my self-healing repertoire…

Alethia Millner

I was able to be paired with a therapist I actually connected with on the first try, which is pretty miraculous. Stephanie is absolutely wonderful. I have been seeing her for 7 months now and my experience has been seamless so far.

Lauren Mirsky

I’ve been a client at this practice for over a year now and it’s been life-changing. The intake was seamless and my therapist is outstanding. Looking forward to continuing my treatment here.

Aramelis Fernandez

Over 2 years with my therapist and she’s a 10/10. She has helped me a lot with all of my issues, especially coping with BPD and depression. She’s very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond!

Perla Lopez

I’ve been with mental health counseling for over a year. I never have an issue contacting them via email. The Theranest, however, seems to glitch a lot. Overall, the therapist I had/have currently is great.

Peachii

Really helpful, kind, and professional communication between me and the counseling center, and I’m so grateful for the quality of therapy and the work I’m able to do in the therapeutic environment that Mechelle has created.

B H

I have been receiving therapy sessions from MMHC since 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Experiencing anxiety in a new light scared me the most. I needed to get help ASAP. Googled around and stumbled upon MMHC. Ever since they have been super supportive and super accommodating. Deff a great place!!

Alana Hernandez

My therapist understood where I was coming from day 1 and I’m forever thankful. My approach to life has changed in a positive way and it is all due to my growth while in therapy.

Yaya 327

So far I have been liking the experience of having a therapist and meeting online! It makes it more convenient for both of us. I’m glad I heard about Manhattan Mental Health.

Nicole Garcia

Intake process was smooth and easy. I love the Telehealth platform used as well. My therapist is great and I love that I am doing my mental health here.
